Two day course (preliminary program):

Understanding Surface Technology
- The key to optimized and sustainable design

12th and 13th April 2012 at the DTU, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark

Bog: Advanced Surface Technology

The course content comprises engineering information on how to tailor specific properties into surfaces produced by chemical and electrochemical processes, thermal spraying and thermal and chemical diffusion processes. More information below.

Course material: The course participants will receive a English-language book on Advanced Surface Technology.

Course language: English.

Course teachers:
Per Møller, professor, Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark as well as specialists in specific fields, Peter Gundel, Chief Metallurgist, Bodycote Varmebehandling A/S (thermo-/chemical processes) and Peter Tommy Nielsen, Chemical Engineer, Project Manager, FORCE Technology (thermal spraying).

Introduction to the course

The course will deal with surface engineering which allows for optimizing the surface properties decoupled from the bulk properties. Surface engineering is used by the automotive, aerospace, energy, electronic, biomedical, textile, chemical, steel, cement, machine tools, construction industries and many other areas.

This course wil focus on such knowledge for obtaining new innovative ideas, with focus on properties and combination of properties for surfaces such as:
Peter Gundel

• Wear resistance
• Triblogical properties
• Magnetical properties
• Electrical conductivity
• Solderability/Welderability
• Hardness
• High Temperature resistance
• Corrosion resistance
• Decorative appearance
Peter Tommy Nielsen
• Catalysis
• Diffusion properties

Surface engineering can be used to develop a wide range of functional properties, including physical, chemical, electrical, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties at the required substrate surfaces. Almost all types of materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites can be coated on similar or dissimilar materials. It is also possible to develop new coatings of newer realized materials like electrodes for cheap hydrogen production or coatings resistant for high temperature oxidation of material in SOFC – solid oxide fuel cells or new ways of making solar cells. Even more new coatings for better bio-compability has been put at the marked few months ago.

Kromnitrid super dense.
Surface technology and surface engineering are today a multi billion market in the Scandinavian countries and coatings to make surfaces more robust against wear and corrosion are approximately the half of the market. Take a look at the offshore sector and especially the new growing market for wind turbines placed in the ocean. Clearly it is also important to apply correct coatings for surfaces applied in connection with food and medical industry. The surface technology is getting a more and more important marked for improving industrial export simply because durability and limitation of natural resources (material and energy) is becomming a huge issue in the new stagnating world economy.
Anodisering
It is no longer enough to copy products, it is clealy necessary
to develop new sustainable solutions.
